- About Hasami(Hasami ware) -
【About Hasami】
Hasami has a population of about 15,000 people and a history spanning 400 years. It has thrived as one of the renowned cities of pottery. About 13% of the eating utensils used in ordinary households in Japan are said to be produced in this town. There are 400 companies engaged in pottery-making in Hasami, and about 2,000 people working in the pottery industry.
【History of Hasami ware】
Arita ware is known all over the world, but Hasami has also thrived as a town of pottery, even though it is adjacent to Arita where Arita ware is produced. However, in recent years, Hasami ware is finding a way to appeal its brand and differentiate itself from Arita ware. The difference between the two wares can be summarized as follows; While Hasami ware pursues simplicity and change, Arita ware has put an emphasis on its traditional style.
Having a common history and tradition spanning 400 years and shipping wares from the same loading ports, the products were known as Imari ware during the Edo period and Arita ware from Meiji era onward. However, differences in each domain thereafter resulted in different values in making potteries. Arita ware thrived as a typical kiln in Saga-Nabeshima Domain, producing such delicate wears with paper cutouts pasted on them as red dishes of Kakiemon. The domain valued the uniqueness of each pottery. On the other hand, Hasami ware was designed and pictured for joint and mass production purposes under the Omura Domain, finding a way to produce through division of labor. The difference described above leads to different values between the two towns; Arita inherits the tradition and Hasami continues to change with the times. Such differences can be seen in the way they decorate the streets, hold festivals and events, and others.
